Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Investigation and Drinking Water Sampling and Reporting at Southern Vermont Regional AirportIn 2018, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC) and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) evaluated the Southern Vermont Regional Airport (SVRA) in North Clarendon, Vermont for potential impacts related to the use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) in firefighting apparatus during firefighting training and fire response activities. A phased sampling of bedrock groundwater monitoring wells revealed that groundwater in bedrock was impacted by common constituents of AFFF known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). |

Westford Community Wastewater Disposal ProjectStone is advancing or supporting several village-scale, soil-based wastewater infrastructure projects that allow modest growth and redevelopment in unsewered villages and designated growth centers. One project advancing to final design after over a decade of careful planning and collaboration is in Westford, Vermont. In 2006-2007, Stone worked with an engineering partner to conduct a wastewater feasibility study for Westford’s Town Center zoning district. Although this area is the Town’s designated growth center, clay-rich soils and shallow bedrock make increasing development density a challenge even on existing relatively large lots. |

Deer Brook Gully Restoration, Georgia, VermontThe Deer Brook watershed includes approximately 8.4 square miles in the towns of Georgia and Fairfax. Deer Brook flows into Arrowhead Mountain Lake, and ultimately into Lake Champlain and is considered to be impaired by sediment, from its mouth 2.5 miles upstream. Since the construction of I-89 and related U.S. Route 7 improvements in the 1970s, and subsequent addition of homes and businesses near the intersection with Route 104A, contributed to this impairment, as storm flows discharge at the head of a gully first assessed and documented by ESPC and Stone in a 2007 report to the Northwest Regional Planning Commission (NRPC). |
